XENA’s success in the fully crewed ocean
races around Australia has attracted enough
attention to bring us our second Open 60 design
commission. Our study of the new stability
rules for the IMOCA 60 class lead us to a
combination of canting keel and water ballast
to achieve the best combination of performance
and safety. Unlike the majority of the IMOCA
fleet the canting keel on this boat will be
driven with a spectra purchase system. The
rationale behind this decision is simplicity,
reliability and maintenance. It is easy to
see when a spectra rope is starting to fray,
and it is easy to replace; hydraulics are
difficult on both counts. The boat was launched
in October.
