40’ Light Weight Water Ballasted Racer/Cruiser

This commission gave us a brief that has been an absolute pleasure to work to: design a 40’ boat with the displacement and sail areas of a modern racer that can be sailed offshore by a crew of two. The answer for us was obvious – water ballasted boat with a shorthanded deck layout. We chose water ballast over a canting keel to generate the power required to handle the large sailplan for reasons of simplicity and reliability. In the ocean it is an advantage to be able to weigh the boat down in tougher conditions – an option not available for canting keels. This project highlighted to us that canting keels are not the only solution for high performance sailing; it is very much a horses for courses decision. The boat was launched March 2006.
